
Telangana Marks National Sports Day with Events Across All 33 Districts
Telangana celebrated National Sports Day on August 29 with events at all 33 district headquarters, honouring Major Dhyan Chand.
Telangana observed National Sports Day on Saturday, August 29, with a series of sporting activities organised across all 33 district headquarters and at major venues in Hyderabad. The events marked the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
The celebrations were coordinated by the Sports Authority of Telangana, with programmes held at prominent locations including the Gachibowli Stadium, LB Stadium, KVB Indoor Stadium, Saroornagar Indoor Stadium, the Cycling Velodrome, and the Gymkhana Grounds.
At the Gachibowli Hockey Stadium, Sports and Youth Services Minister Vakiti Srihari led the tributes by offering floral homage at the statue of Major Dhyan Chand. The ceremony was attended by Sports Authority of Telangana Chairman Shivasena Reddy, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director A. Sonibala Devi, along with noted athletes including Arjuna Awardee Gayatri Gopichand, badminton player Treesa Jolly, and athlete Nandini Agasara. Officials, coaches, and sportspersons also participated in the programme.
As part of the day's events, the Sports Authority of Telangana felicitated Nandini Agasara, Gayatri Gopichand, and Treesa Jolly in recognition of their contributions to Indian sports.
Following the tribute ceremony, Minister Srihari, alongside Mr. Reddy and Ms. Devi, inaugurated the final match of the Major Dhyan Chand Memorial Khelo Telangana Hockey League at the Gachibowli Hockey Stadium.
Continuing the celebrations, a special edition of the 'Sundays on Cycling' programme is scheduled for Sunday at all 33 district headquarters and at various Sports Authority of Telangana venues in Hyderabad.
