NCERT Class 9 Social Science Textbook Drops European Revolutions, Adds Indian Resistance Movements

The latest edition of the NCERT Class 9 Social Science textbook has dropped content on the French and Russian revolutions, replacing it with material on resistance movements in medieval India. The revision marks a significant shift in how the textbook frames historical change, moving away from European upheavals toward Indian armed resistance against foreign invasions.

The new content attributes foreign invasions to India's wealth, presenting the country's prosperity as a pull factor for external attacks. It then focuses on the armed resistance mounted by various Indian communities — including Sikhs, Jats, Rajputs and Ahoms — against these incursions.

The changes are part of the broader revision of the Class 9 Social Science curriculum. The textbook now places greater emphasis on indigenous responses to invasion rather than on revolutionary movements in Europe.

This is not the first time the NCERT textbooks have been revised. The latest edition continues that process, with the removal of the French and Russian revolutions and the addition of Indian resistance narratives representing a notable thematic reorientation.
