NCSC Issues Seven-Day Notice to Punjab Over SC Reservation Denial in Lecturer Recruitment
NCSC has sought a time-bound response from Punjab's Chief Secretary over alleged denial of reservation benefits to SC candidates in lecturer recruitment.
The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has initiated an inquiry into allegations that reservation benefits were denied to Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates in the recruitment process for 1,013 Lecturer posts in Punjab's Education Department.
The matter stems from a representation by Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh, who alleged that the state's reservation policy was not implemented correctly during the hiring process. The complaint specifically points to violations in several subjects, including Punjabi, Commerce, Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geography, where the prescribed roster system was reportedly not followed.
Acting under Article 338 of the Constitution, the NCSC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Punjab, directing the state government to submit the facts of the case, details of action taken, and all relevant records—including the recruitment notification and reservation roster—within seven days of receiving the notice.
NCSC Chairman Kishor Makwana described the denial of reservation benefits as a very serious matter. He reiterated the Commission's commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of Scheduled Castes and ensuring strict compliance with reservation provisions in government services.
The Commission has warned that if the state fails to respond within the stipulated timeframe, it may exercise its powers under Article 338 to summon officials, acting with the authority of a civil court. The NCSC has stated it will take all necessary legal steps to ensure justice in the matter.
