Nepal Avalanche-Triggered Floods Leave Hundreds Missing, Eight Dead

An ice-rock avalanche caused flash floods in Nepal, killing at least eight and leaving 384 tourists missing, prompting a rescue appeal to India and China.

A devastating flash flood, triggered by an avalanche of ice and rock, swept through parts of Nepal on Wednesday, leaving at least eight people dead and hundreds of tourists unaccounted for. The deluge, which struck around 9 a.m., primarily affected the Bhotekoshi River valley, destroying villages, roads, and hydropower installations in its path.

Nepali officials reported that 384 tourists, including 291 from India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia, are missing. The government has issued urgent warnings for residents in several districts to avoid the banks of the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers.

Sasmit Pokharel, a Nepali government spokesperson, confirmed that authorities have formally requested assistance from both India and China to aid in rescue operations. The Rasuwa district has been identified as the worst-hit area, a region that experienced a similar catastrophe in August of the previous year when a glacial lake overflowed in Tibet, claiming nine lives and damaging a key cross-border bridge.

Climate experts from the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) attribute Wednesday's event to an avalanche from a glacier. They noted that the Lhende Khola River, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi, experienced the most severe flooding. Saswata Sanyal, a disaster risk reduction specialist at ICIMOD, explained that this is the second flood in fourteen months for the Lhende Khola, this time caused by an ice-rock avalanche on the Nepali side that temporarily dammed the river before releasing a sudden surge.

Sanyal emphasized that in a warming Himalaya, early warning systems are the first line of adaptation. The Himalayan region, spanning Nepal and neighboring countries, is warming faster than the global average due to human-induced climate change, making it increasingly susceptible to extreme weather events like heavy rains, floods, and landslides. Recent research by ICIMOD indicates that glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya are melting at an accelerating rate, with ice loss rates doubling since 2000.
