Himalayan Border Floods: Death Toll Climbs Past 470 as New Lake Threat Emerges

The death toll from catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-China border has risen sharply, with Nepali authorities reporting at least 469 fatalities as of Friday morning. This marks a significant increase from the 390 deaths confirmed a day earlier. China has so far reported only three deaths in Tibet, and the combined official count of missing persons across both countries now exceeds 1,500.

Rescue teams are working against time to locate survivors, with operations continuing along riverbanks and through debris-strewn mountain terrain. The disaster struck on Wednesday, unleashing mudslides and torrents that engulfed the Gyirong Port border crossing and surrounding valleys.

A new and urgent concern has emerged: a barrier lake formed upstream by the landslide and floodwaters is already overflowing. Both Nepali and Chinese authorities have warned that this lake could trigger additional flooding and have urged residents in vulnerable areas to move to higher ground.

Chinese state media, using drone footage, reported that the lake sits at an elevation of 2,950 meters, roughly 1,000 meters above Gyirong Port. The natural dam holding the water is located more than 10 kilometers from the border crossing. China's Ministry of Water Resources estimates the lake currently holds about 2 million cubic meters of water, with projections suggesting an additional 3 million cubic meters could flow in over the next three days, raising the risk of a breach.
