Nepal-China Border Flash Floods Kill 160, Hundreds Missing

Rescue operations continued on Wednesday in the aftermath of catastrophic flash floods that struck the border region between Nepal and China, leaving at least 160 people dead and hundreds more unaccounted for. The deluge, which swept through communities with little warning, has also brought travel in several areas to a standstill.

Nepali police have confirmed at least 157 fatalities within the country's borders. In China's Tibet region, state broadcaster CCTV reported at least three deaths and 265 people missing in Gyirong County, which lies adjacent to the affected zone.

Authorities in Nepal have stated that 403 individuals are reported missing, a figure that includes 341 foreign nationals. The scale of the disaster has prompted a large-scale response involving army personnel, who were seen navigating through mud-covered terrain in the Nuwakot district, where a truck lay buried under debris.

Experts suggest that an avalanche triggered by a glacier is the likely cause of the flash floods, a phenomenon increasingly observed in the warming Himalaya region. The sudden release of water from glacial lakes can cause devastating downstream flooding, a risk that is growing as global temperatures rise.

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed as rescue teams work to reach isolated areas and account for the hundreds of missing tourists, workers, and local residents.
