Nepal Flood Death Toll Climbs to 469 as Rescuers Hunt for 1,500 Missing
Nepal's flash flood death toll reaches 469; over 1,500 remain missing as rescuers face a new threat from an overflowing lake.
Rescue teams in Nepal are working against the clock to locate more than 1,500 people still unaccounted for, two days after a devastating flash flood swept through the Himalayan border region with China.
The confirmed death toll in Nepal has risen sharply to 469, up from 390 reported just a day earlier. Across the border, Chinese authorities have confirmed three deaths in Tibet, bringing the combined official toll to 472.
Authorities have issued a fresh warning that an overflowing lake formed in the aftermath of the disaster could trigger additional flooding, complicating the already perilous search operation in Nuwakot district.
Video footage from the affected area shows widespread destruction, with heavy machinery clearing debris from damaged streets. Injured survivors, including one person being pushed in a wheelchair, were seen being loaded onto a helicopter for evacuation.
Search teams are now focusing on the hardest-hit villages along the border, where entire settlements were swept away by the sudden surge of water. The combination of difficult terrain and the looming threat of further flooding is hampering efforts to reach those still trapped or missing.
