Nepal Flood: 476 Foreign Tourists From 29 Countries Missing

Nepal's tourism board has confirmed that 476 foreign nationals from 29 countries are among the 570 tourists reported missing following the catastrophic floods that struck the Himalayan nation and China's Tibet region. The announcement was made on Thursday, updating earlier figures.

In Tibet's Gyirong county, state broadcaster CCTV reported 260 foreigners missing, though their nationalities have not yet been specified.

India has the highest number of missing nationals, with 177 citizens unaccounted for, according to the tourism board. Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong said authorities are coordinating with Nepal to locate 34 Australians. Britain has 33 citizens missing, while Canada reports 25.

Other countries with significant numbers include the United States with 63 missing, Malaysia with 55 nationals reported uncontactable to its embassy in Kathmandu, and Ukraine with 53 missing. Germany has at least eight missing, and Japan's embassy has requested a search for five citizens.

South Korea's foreign ministry said nine of its nationals working at a hydropower plant are missing, with ten others stranded. New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, and several European nations have also reported smaller numbers of missing citizens.

Additional countries with missing nationals include Belarus, Belgium, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.
