Nepal-Tibet Floods: Death Toll Crosses 630 as Rescue Efforts Enter Day Four

Rescue operations in communities devastated by flash floods along the Nepal-China border entered their fourth day on Saturday, with authorities still pulling survivors from the debris and transporting them to safety. The combined death toll in Nepal and Tibet has risen to 633, with nearly 3,000 people still unaccounted for, according to updated figures released by Nepali authorities. Chinese officials have reported seven deaths and more than 550 missing on their side of the border.

In Nuwakot, one of the worst-hit Nepali districts, military helicopters resumed flights before noon after poor weather had temporarily grounded aerial missions. At a makeshift relief centre set up at an army barracks, personnel were seen unloading aid supplies and preparing teams with rappelling gear for deployment on the next sorties.

Families gathered outside the perimeter, anxiously scanning printed lists pasted on walls that named the missing and the dead. Some took photographs of the sheets, while others wiped away tears as they searched for the names of their loved ones. As the day wore on, more people arrived at the camp, hoping for news of relatives who had not yet been found.

The disaster has overwhelmed local response mechanisms, with military personnel playing a central role in both delivering relief and conducting search-and-rescue operations across the rugged terrain.
