Netanyahu in New York for UN address, but no Trump meeting on agenda
Israel's prime minister is in New York to address the UN General Assembly, with no meeting planned with President Trump.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at the United Nations in New York on Thursday to deliver a speech to the General Assembly, at a time when his country's international standing is under growing strain.
His stay in the city is brief. According to his office, the prime minister is working to a tight schedule and must be back in Israel before the Jewish holiday of Sukkot begins at sundown on Friday.
While in New York, Netanyahu is due to hold talks with a number of world leaders. However, no meeting has been arranged with US President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio or Arab leaders.
The visit comes as Hamas said it was prepared to move ahead with the next phases of a Gaza peace agreement. Separately, a senior European Union official said only a small share of the money required to rebuild the Gaza Strip has so far been raised.
Netanyahu's address to the assembly is expected to be closely watched, given the diplomatic pressure facing Israel and the limited scope of his engagements on the sidelines of the gathering.
