Netherlands Grinds to Halt as Nationwide Strike Hits Public Transport

A nationwide 24-hour strike brought public transport across the Netherlands to a near standstill on Wednesday, as labour unions protested government proposals to cut welfare spending. Trains, buses, and ferries were largely absent from service throughout the country, with the action also disrupting international rail links to Belgium, Germany, France, and Britain.

The industrial action was organised in response to government plans to reduce annual welfare expenditure by up to €6.5 billion ($7.6 billion). The proposed cuts, which primarily target unemployment benefits, are intended to fund a significant increase in defence spending.

The strike intensifies the political challenges facing the centre-right minority government, which was installed earlier this year. Without a parliamentary majority, the coalition relies on external support to pass its legislative agenda. The left-wing Pro party, which leads the opposition, has aligned with the unions, demanding that all welfare reduction proposals be withdrawn.

In an attempt to build support, the government has already abandoned a plan to raise the retirement age and agreed last week to moderate other proposed measures. However, the Pro party has indicated that these concessions are likely insufficient, setting the stage for further negotiations following the official presentation of the government's budget on September 15.
