Nevada Secretary of State Hails Supreme Court Rejection of Trump Mail Ballot Restrictions

Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar, a Democrat, on Monday welcomed the U.S. Supreme Court's decision rejecting President Donald Trump's push to give the U.S. Postal Service a central role in determining who could receive a mail ballot.

Speaking via video call, Aguilar framed the outcome as a victory for voters nationwide and particularly in Nevada, where mail voting is the preferred method of participation. "Today, the voters really won across America," he said, adding that access to a voice in the coming midterm election is critical to the 2028 election cycle.

The ruling lifts uncertainty that had hung over election preparations even as voting was already underway. Election offices across the country can now send out mail ballots as planned, without having to comply with new Postal Service rules imposed at the eleventh hour. The decision preserves the status quo.

Aguilar emphasized Nevada's status as a battleground state, noting that the road to the White House runs through it and that no one can win the presidency without the votes of Nevadans. He described the state as diverse geographically and economically, with a 24/7 economy spanning the hospitality and gaming industry in the south and mining in the northeast.

"The fact that these Nevadans, our Nevadans get to have a voice in the upcoming election because mail ballot is critical to that voice," he said.

On election administration, Aguilar said planning for each election begins immediately after the previous one, with preparations for this cycle underway since November 2024. He said the Supreme Court's decision validated that states run elections and can make decisions in the best interest of their citizens, setting aside what he called the "chaos and lack of leadership" from the Trump administration.
