New York Diaspora Holds Candlelight Vigil for Nepal Flood Victims

Nepali diaspora organizations in New York held a candlelight vigil on Thursday to honor the victims of catastrophic flash floods in Nepal. The gathering saw community members light candles arranged to spell "NEPAL" as a mark of solidarity with those affected by the disaster.

The floods, triggered by a glacier collapse along the mountainous Nepal-China border, unleashed a wall of water and mud several stories high that swept through communities with little warning. Rescue teams and military helicopters are continuing their search for hundreds of people still missing in the region.

Authorities in Nepal and China have confirmed more than 390 deaths, with over 1,400 people unaccounted for, including many foreign nationals and pilgrims. Hundreds more have been displaced from their homes across the Himalayan belt.

The steep valleys below the world's highest peaks are particularly prone to such calamities, and scientists note that melting glaciers—accelerated by human-induced climate change—are increasing the frequency of these events. The disaster has drawn international attention, with leaders expressing shock at the scale of destruction, noting how even sturdy buildings were obliterated by the force of the water.
