Newborn boy found dead in abandoned bag near Agara Lake in Bengaluru

A newborn baby boy was found dead near Agara Lake in Bengaluru's HSR Layout on Sunday morning, after his body was wrapped in a bedsheet and left inside a bag, police said.

The discovery was made around 7.30 a.m. when Maruthi, 27, a driver and resident of Ramamurthy Nagar, visited the spot with a friend and noticed the bag lying near the lake. On looking closer, he saw a leg protruding from it. Blood was visible on the infant's leg, and it became clear that the child was a newborn and appeared to be dead.

Maruthi alerted the police control room. Personnel reached the location and took steps to secure the body. Investigators suspect the baby was abandoned shortly after birth.

The HSR Layout police have registered a case under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and have begun an investigation to identify the infant's parents or anyone else responsible for his care, as well as to establish the circumstances that led to the abandonment and death.

As part of the probe, officers are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and gathering other evidence in an effort to trace those responsible.
