Newly-wed couple found dead in Sasthamcotta Lake; suicide suspected

A young newly-wed couple was found dead in Sasthamcotta Lake near the Ambalakkadavu area on Sunday, September 6, 2026. The police suspect the deaths to be a case of suicide.

The deceased have been identified as Rajeev, 26, and Abhirami, 19. Abhirami's body was recovered from the lake on Sunday morning. During subsequent search operations, the Sasthamcotta Fire and Rescue team located Rajeev's body approximately 50 metres away. Investigators believe the couple entered the lake during the early hours of the day.

The couple had married four months ago after being in a relationship, despite strong opposition from both families. Following their marriage, they resided in a rented house and had no active contact with relatives. Rajeev was employed as a cleaning staff member at a nearby school. Police had reportedly met with the couple last month to address family-related concerns.

After the post-mortem examination, the bodies were handed over to relatives. The Sasthamcotta police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
