NHRC seeks response on Meta ads enabling child sexual abuse material access

NHRC takes suo motu cognisance of paid Meta ads promoting child sexual abuse material access, citing review mechanism failures.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports that paid advertisements on Meta's platforms were promoting access to child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The development comes after investigative reporting revealed that such ads had apparently cleared Meta's automated review process and remained live on the platform.

According to the information before the Commission, these advertisements continued to be accessible even after being flagged through Meta's own grievance redressal mechanism. They were only removed after the matter was specifically brought to the company's attention by the BBC, raising serious questions about the efficacy of the platform's content moderation safeguards.

The NHRC's intervention underscores concerns about the adequacy of existing safeguards on social media platforms in preventing the dissemination of content that violates child rights. The Commission is expected to seek a detailed response from the platform regarding its review protocols and the steps taken to prevent recurrence of such violations.
