NHRC seeks action reports from ministries, Delhi Police over CSAM-linked Instagram ads

NHRC asks MeitY, MIB, and Delhi Police for action taken reports on Instagram ads linked to child sexual abuse material.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has intervened in the matter of advertisements on Instagram that are allegedly connected to Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). The Commission has formally sought Action Taken Reports from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), and the Delhi Police.

The notices come amid growing scrutiny of Meta's role in allowing such content to surface on its platform. The NHRC has set a two-week deadline for the submission of these reports, indicating the urgency it attaches to the issue.

In its communication, the Commission has underscored the legal obligations arising under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. It has stressed the need for proactive measures to safeguard child victims and to conduct a thorough investigation into how such advertisements were permitted to appear.

The development signals a coordinated push by the statutory body to hold both the platform and the relevant government agencies accountable for their oversight and enforcement duties in the digital space.
