NIA Probes Low-Paid Contract Worker in PNB Fake Currency Case

The National Investigation Agency is examining a contract worker whose monthly income of ₹11,000 sits uneasily beside assets that include five houses, an SUV and a sedan, in connection with a case involving counterfeit currency recovered from a chest of Punjab National Bank.
The recovered fake notes are valued at ₹17.29 crore. Investigators have not found direct evidence tying the worker to the counterfeit currency itself, but his association with a suspended manager has drawn scrutiny.
The manager's suspension and the worker's relationship with him form part of the wider inquiry into how the fake notes ended up in the bank chest. The probe is looking at whether the worker's assets can be explained by his declared income, and at the nature of his links to the suspended official.
No charges have been announced against the worker, and the investigation remains at a preliminary stage. The NIA's examination of the assets and the association is part of efforts to establish whether there is any connection between the worker and the seized counterfeit currency.
