Heavy Gunfire, Explosions Rock Niger's Capital Overnight
Sustained gunfire and explosions hit Niamey overnight, including near the airport and presidential palace, prompting a military response.
Niamey, Niger — Overnight violence shook Niger's capital as sustained gunfire and explosions were reported in several key areas, including near the main international airport and the district housing the presidential palace.
Witnesses reported that heavy shooting began just after midnight at the premises of Diori Hamani International Airport, which also hosts a significant military base. This marks the third instance of unrest at the airport this year.
Local media also reported gunshots in the Plateau administrative district, the city's administrative heart where the Presidential Palace and other key government institutions are located.
In response, the ruling military council, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, announced that defence and security forces have been deployed. In a statement on social media, the council called for unity and vigilance, saying the military is mobilized for the defense of the nation.
The cause of the gunfire and explosions remains unclear. However, a local lawmaker described the incident as a "cowardly attack." The airport area has been targeted by jihadist groups twice in recent months, adding to the pressure on the country's military junta.
