At Least 37 Dead in Nigeria Oil Theft Accident

At least 37 people have died in Nigeria's oil-rich Rivers state after an attempt to steal crude oil went horribly wrong, according to an advocacy group and police officials.

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Center reported that the victims were siphoning crude from an illegal tapping point on a loading vessel into their boats on Thursday. The operation released toxic fumes at high pressure, which the individuals inhaled, leading to their deaths. The group added that many people remain unaccounted for, with a network of volunteers assisting in the search.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday but did not provide an official death toll. Police spokesperson Blessing Agabe stated that the victims were allegedly attempting to steal crude oil and that an investigation has been launched.

This tragedy highlights the persistent issue of oil theft in the Niger Delta, a region that has suffered from severe environmental degradation and poverty despite decades of oil exploration in Africa's largest producer.
