NMC Greenlights Bagalkot Medical College, MBBS Admissions to Begin
NMC permits Bagalkot Medical College to admit 100 MBBS students from 2026-27, following a successful appeal.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission to the Bagalkot Medical College and Research Institute to admit 100 students for the first year of MBBS, starting from the academic year 2026-27. The approval comes after the college's earlier application was rejected, prompting an appeal that was subsequently upheld.
The state government had established the institute on the premises of the government hospital in Bagalkot last year. The NMC's Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) has now issued a Letter of Permission (LoP) following the decision of the second Appeal Committee, which reviewed the case after the first committee's order on July 23, 2026.
Holabasu Shettar, a member of the government medical college agitation committee, welcomed the decision, calling it a milestone for healthcare and medical education in the district. He noted that the college will create opportunities for aspiring medical students and strengthen the availability of trained professionals and healthcare facilities in the region. He also thanked former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and incumbent Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for their roles in establishing the college.
The permission has been granted under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023. These regulations require applicants to submit the prescribed scheme and mandatory documents to the MARB.
