Bus in Noida Rape Case Had 12 Challans Since April, 9 in July Alone
The bus involved in the Noida gang-rape had 12 challans since April, including nine in July, mostly for speeding.
The sleeper bus at the centre of the alleged gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl in Noida had accumulated 12 traffic challans since its registration in April, with nine of those issued in just 23 days in July, according to documents accessed by this publication.
Most of the fines were for speeding, primarily on the Yamuna Expressway. The bus was registered with the Firozabad RTO on April 28. Its first challans came on May 12, when it was fined Rs 4,000 at two separate points on the expressway for speeding.
In June, it was fined in Noida's Sector 168 for changing lanes without using an indicator. The July challans, totalling Rs 56,000, included multiple speeding fines on the Yamuna Expressway, a Rs 26,000 penalty for breaking traffic rules in Hamirpur, and a speeding ticket near Akshardham temple in Delhi.
The sharp rise in challans reflects a broader trend of increased automated enforcement, with camera coverage now extending to more junctions and roads, catching violations more efficiently than manual systems.
Following the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced plans to link GPS systems of buses entering Delhi from neighbouring states with the Delhi government's department. She said discussions would be held with neighbouring states to strengthen safety for women and children travelling by bus.
The Class 11 student from Mainpuri had left home after being scolded by her mother and was heading to her cousin's place in Noida Sector 63. She mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk in Greater Noida amid heavy rain and boarded the bus after the conductor allegedly said it was going to Sector 63. She was allegedly gang-raped on the moving bus and abandoned near Kashmere Gate. Both suspects have been arrested, and police are preparing a chargesheet.
