Nordic-Baltic Leaders Pledge Continued Support in Kyiv

Nordic and Baltic leaders met in Kyiv, pledging continued support, including Norwegian aid and defense cooperation.

Leaders from the Nordic and Baltic nations convened in Kyiv on Sunday for a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where they reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine's defense efforts.

President Zelenskyy stated that the discussions centered on strengthening Ukraine's defenses against ballistic missiles, preparing for the upcoming winter, and securing necessary funding. He emphasized that financial resources are critical for both anti-ballistic measures and domestic drone production, which he described as essential for responding to Russia's escalatory actions.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb highlighted the practical nature of the visit, noting that he had brought representatives from seven Finnish defense companies to Kyiv. These firms are set to sign cooperation agreements with their Ukrainian counterparts. Stubb stressed that the meeting was not merely symbolic, adding that the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) group stands firmly behind Ukraine.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced that Norway's support for Ukraine next year would remain at this year's level of $9 billion, a record high. He stated that the funding would be aligned with priorities that make a tangible difference in Ukraine's fight to remain a sovereign and democratic nation.

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs expressed skepticism about the prospects of a negotiated peace deal, arguing that Ukraine's partners should prepare for the possibility of a prolonged conflict. "Somebody has to win, and it should be Ukraine," he said, urging allies to focus their energy on providing support where it is needed most.
