Kerala expands free legal aid for expats with consultants in seven nations
Kerala's NoRKA Roots will appoint legal consultants in seven countries to provide free legal aid to expatriate Malayalis.
The Kerala government is expanding its support network for non-resident Keralites by strengthening the Pravasi Legal Aid Cell (PLAC), a scheme offering free legal assistance to those living abroad. As part of this initiative, legal consultants will now be appointed in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Australia, Canada, and Malaysia.
NoRKA Roots, the field agency under the Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NoRKA), has begun accepting applications for these positions. Eligible candidates must have at least two years of experience practising law in a foreign country and should be committed to the welfare of expatriate Malayalis.
The PLAC scheme is designed to help Keralites who face legal difficulties overseas due to unfamiliarity with local laws, involvement in minor offences, or situations beyond their control. The appointed consultants will offer legal advice, assist with compensation claims and mercy petitions, conduct legal awareness sessions alongside cultural organisations, and provide expert help with translations into various foreign languages.
