North Korea Slams Upcoming US-South Korea Drills, Vows Stronger Nuclear Deterrent

North Korea has publicly condemned the upcoming joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, labeling them as more provocative than last year's drills. The condemnation, reported by state media KCNA, marks Pyongyang's first official response to the scheduled maneuvers.

The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercises are set to take place from August 17 to 27. This year's drills will incorporate scenarios to counter drones, GPS disruption, and cyberattacks, reflecting an adaptation to North Korea's evolving military capabilities.

A spokesperson for North Korea's Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying that the trilateral military cooperation between the US, Japan, and South Korea is effectively becoming a nuclear alliance. The statement warned that Pyongyang will meet this new level of threat with a correspondingly new level of deterrent.

In a separate commentary, KCNA accused the United States of pursuing a new nuclear strategy that lowers the threshold for using such weapons, potentially pushing global security to the brink of a nuclear war. The commentary specifically cited US nuclear cooperation with South Korea and extended-deterrence commitments to Japan, suggesting the Korean Peninsula could become a priority target.

South Korea's Unification Ministry acknowledged the statement as the North's first official reaction to the upcoming exercise, which Pyongyang routinely denounces as a provocation that heightens tensions.

The announcement comes just days after North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the sea off the peninsula's east coast on Wednesday. That launch, originating from the Wonsan area, followed a similar missile test from the same location six days earlier.
