Northeast Storms Bring Flooding, Possible Tornadoes to New York and Delaware

Heavy rain and winds hit the Northeast, flooding roads, damaging a Long Island beach club, and knocking out power in Delaware.

Severe storms swept through the northeastern United States on Thursday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and possible tornadoes that caused flooding, property damage, and power outages across the region.

On Long Island, a suspected tornado struck Atlantic Beach on the outer barrier, tearing apart a major beach club and scattering broken chairs and wooden beams across the shoreline. Social media footage showed debris flying through the air amid intense rain. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said there were no reports of serious injuries or deaths, but property damage was significant. He declared a state of emergency and noted that search teams were checking cabanas to ensure no one was trapped. He also mentioned that first responders were rescuing people stranded in vehicles due to flooding on the south shore.

The National Weather Service had warned of waterspouts—tornado-like hazards over water—but could not immediately confirm that a tornado touched down on the beach. Meteorologist Bryan Ramsey said the storm was moving offshore eastward by Thursday evening and was expected to weaken over the next few hours.

In New York City, flooding forced the closure of part of the Long Island Expressway in Queens in both directions, according to city emergency management. Photos showed lines of stopped cars as crews waded through the water.

In Delaware, a likely tornado struck Dover, causing significant damage across the city, according to police. Fallen trees, downed power lines, and flooded roads were reported. The Delaware Electric Cooperative said more than 1,000 customers lost power in the northern part of its service area. Police urged residents to stay home and stay safe.

Flash flood warnings were also issued for parts of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey as the system moved through the region.
