Norway detains Russian cruise ship in Svalbard over Ukraine energy award

Norwegian authorities have detained a Russian-flagged vessel in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, acting on a court order tied to Ukraine's efforts to recover a multi-billion dollar arbitration award from Moscow.

The ship, the Professor Molchanov, which operates commercial expedition cruises in the region, was seized on Wednesday following a ruling by the Nord-Troms district court on August 31. Svalbard Governor Lars Fause confirmed that the vessel is now barred from leaving its berth in the settlement of Barentsburg.

The action was taken at the request of Naftogaz, Ukraine's state-owned energy company. The firm is seeking to enforce a $4.22 billion award granted in 2023 by an arbitration tribunal in The Hague. That ruling ordered Russia to compensate Naftogaz for the unlawful seizure of its energy assets, including gas fields and pipelines, following Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

With Russia refusing to pay, Naftogaz has been pursuing legal avenues in multiple jurisdictions to seize Russian commercial property. Naftogaz CEO Sergii Fedorenko described the Norwegian action as a significant step toward accountability, stating that Russia cannot avoid its obligations by ignoring international rulings. He added that the company would continue to target Russian assets worldwide.
