NTA scouts for computer-testing centres ahead of NEET-UG shift to CBT mode
NTA seeks details from AICTE-approved government institutions to set up computer-based testing centres for NEET-UG and other exams.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has initiated a nationwide exercise to identify and develop testing centres for computer-based entrance examinations, including NEET-UG, scheduled to shift to online mode from next year. As part of this, the NTA has directed the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to collect infrastructure details from government-run technical institutions.
Earlier this week, AICTE wrote to Vice Chancellors of state technical universities and heads of AICTE-approved government institutions, seeking information on their computing facilities, available space, and related infrastructure. The move follows the government's decision to transition NEET-UG from pen-and-paper to computer-based testing after the exam paper leak in May, which led to the cancellation of the first attempt and widespread protests.
The NTA's communication to AICTE on August 5 requested data on functional computers, IT systems, networking, internet connectivity, power backup, CCTV availability, and vacant space. Institutions have been asked to submit verified details by September 15.
AICTE has shared a standard format for the responses, emphasising that only government-run institutions approved by it should provide information. The collected data will help NTA assess suitable locations for standard testing centres across the country, ensuring a wider geographic spread for future computer-based exams.
