Nupur Sanon backs sister Kriti in Rakhi ad outfit row, tells critics to 'evolve'
Nupur Sanon defends Kriti Sanon after Kangana Ranaut's remarks on the Rakhi ad outfit, urging critics to evolve.
The debate over Kriti Sanon's outfit in a recent Rakshabandhan advertisement has drawn a new response, this time from her sister, Nupur Sanon. In a social media post, Nupur came out in support of Kriti, questioning why people are so concerned about what another woman chooses to wear.
"Imagine being this bothered by what another woman chooses to wear. Respectfully, evolve," Nupur wrote. She added a personal note, saying, "PS: I'm the one she tied the rakhi to, and if I don't have a problem with it, why do you?"
The controversy began after Kriti appeared in the ad wearing an ivory lehenga with a deep-neck blouse and a cape. While many appreciated the look, others called it inappropriate, questioning the outfit in the name of culture and tradition.
Kriti had earlier addressed the criticism directly. In an Instagram post, she said the essence of festivals lies not in clothing but in the emotions and meaning behind traditions. She explained that she and her sister tie rakhi to each other, as they believe they can protect one another just as well as a brother would. She also noted that their prayer and promise extends to their dogs, as they are family too.
Kriti questioned why a woman's respect for culture is still measured by her clothes. "Culture & Traditions are in her heart, not in her neckline!" she wrote, adding, "Ethnic fashion has evolved over the years, but still a woman's respect for her culture is measured by just her clothes!!"
The debate also drew a reaction from actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut. Sharing a note on her Instagram Stories, Kangana said it is a wonderful time to be a woman with a closet full of options, from cocktail dresses to saris. She questioned why one would choose to tie a rakhi in what she called a bikini or undergarments, adding that the advertisement looked "intentionally creepy."
Kriti Sanon was last seen in 'Cocktail 2', which also starred Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna. Directed by Homi Adajania, the film is currently streaming on Netflix.
