Man Killed After Bag Catches in NYC Subway Door During Rush Hour

A man was killed after being dragged under a New York City subway train when a bag he was carrying became caught in a closing door, police said.

Yaw Boahene, 57, a Brooklyn resident, was getting off the train at a Brooklyn station at around 6 p.m. on Monday, during the evening rush hour, when his shopping bag snagged in the doors. He was pulled onto the tracks and run over as the train departed, according to police.

Officers who responded found Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death, and the police investigation is continuing.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the subway system, referred questions about the incident to police.

Deaths from passengers being dragged by trains have occurred periodically on the country's largest subway network. In 2022, a 20-year-old commuter was killed at the Columbus Circle station in upper Manhattan after his backpack or a piece of his clothing became stuck in a door as he tried to board.
