Ocasio-Cortez Opens Up About Egg Freezing Amid 2028 Speculation
AOC says she is freezing her eggs, calling it a personal choice for control, while not ruling out a 2028 presidential or Senate run.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has revealed she is freezing her eggs, framing the decision as a personal step to feel more in control of her life as she weighs her political future, including a possible 2028 presidential bid.
The 36-year-old New York Democrat shared the news on Instagram, calling it a choice she is making for herself. She acknowledged that speaking so openly about her potential family plans carries a "political risk," but said it is important to have these conversations.
In an appearance on ABC's "This Week," Ocasio-Cortez said she has not ruled out running for president or challenging Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer for his New York seat in 2028. She tied her personal disclosure to a broader effort to normalize discussions about the pressures women face in their professional and personal lives, particularly under the current administration's policies on reproductive care.
"In this political environment, where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think it's important for us as leaders to have these conversations," she said.
The Trump administration opposes abortion rights, and the president's Supreme Court appointees helped strike down Roe v. Wade in 2022. However, Trump has also signed an executive order aimed at lowering the costs of in vitro fertilization.
Ocasio-Cortez, a leading progressive voice, sponsored a 2022 Democratic bill to codify abortion rights into federal law after the court's ruling. She also noted that women in politics and other fields face different scrutiny regarding their family status, pointing out that men rarely face questions about their age or plans to start a family when running for office.
