On Teachers' Day, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi addressed students at Secondary Board High School in Cuttack, urging them to stay away from social media and concentrate on their studies and career building. He said that a student's primary duty is to study well, acquire skills, and contribute to personal and national development, and cautioned against activities that could hinder their progress.
Majhi described education as a process of shaping human beings, not just acquiring knowledge. He also called for a friendlier relationship between students and teachers.
The Chief Minister highlighted his government's 'KG to PG free education' initiative, claiming Odisha could be the first state to implement it. He also spoke about plans to improve school infrastructure and quality of education.
Addressing the issue of teacher vacancies, Majhi announced that the government intends to appoint 45,000 teachers in the coming days. This comes as hundreds of teachers in Odisha continued their protest at Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar for the 21st day, demanding Grant-in-Aid, better service conditions, pension benefits, and revision of pay scales.
A protesting teacher expressed disappointment that no government official had reached out for talks, noting the irony of teachers being on the streets on a day they are usually revered. Meanwhile, the state government cancelled the Mukhyamantri Sikshya Puraskar ceremony scheduled for Saturday without providing a reason.
