Two Years After Basement Drowning, Old Rajinder Nagar Hostels Still Raise Safety Concerns

Two years after the deaths of three UPSC aspirants in a flooded coaching basement, the narrow lanes of Old Rajinder Nagar in West Delhi are once again under the spotlight. A recent visit to the area, a dense hub for civil services preparation, suggests that the ground realities for students have changed little.

Students living in the locality's numerous hostels and paying guest accommodations describe their daily existence in stark terms. Many liken their cramped quarters to a jail, citing a lack of basic amenities and pervasive concerns over safety. The living spaces are often overcrowded, with poor ventilation and inadequate hygiene standards.

The shadow of the 2024 monsoon tragedy looms large over these concerns. That incident, which saw three young aspirants drown inside a waterlogged basement of a coaching institute, had prompted promises of stricter oversight and better infrastructure. However, the current conditions indicate that many of the systemic issues remain unaddressed.

For thousands of young people who come to the capital each year with the dream of cracking the civil services exam, the struggle is not just academic.
