Oman Pledges Continued Efforts to Protect Strait of Hormuz Shipping at UNGA
Oman reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz during the UN General Assembly's General Debate.
Oman has reiterated its commitment to efforts aimed at safeguarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, with Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi telling the UN General Assembly that Muscat will continue working to protect transit through the strategic waterway.
Speaking during the General Debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Al-Busaidi called on all parties to cooperate with Oman in these efforts, which he said are intended to serve the interests of everyone who relies on passage through the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz has seen persistent disruptions to navigation, which have severely affected crude oil exports from the region.
Tensions around the waterway escalated after Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities on February 28. Iran has since tightened its grip on the strait.
On August 25, Iran and Oman issued a joint statement announcing their intention to establish a temporary joint shipping corridor in the strait. The two sides also stressed the need to consult with other countries in the Gulf region, to comply with applicable international law, and to respect the sovereign rights of coastal states.
