Omar Abdullah Calls Mosque Demolitions and Attacks on Minorities 'Unfortunate'
J&K CM Omar Abdullah expressed regret over mosque demolitions and assaults on minorities, and said he remains in touch with the Home Minister on statehood and other issues.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday described recent incidents of mosque demolitions and attacks on minority communities across the country as deeply unfortunate. Speaking on the sidelines of the first International Film Festival held in Srinagar, he said the manner in which Muslims are being treated as outsiders or as 'others' — whether through the demolition of places of worship or through physical assaults — is unacceptable and should not occur.
Abdullah's remarks come amid growing concerns over the safety and rights of minority groups in various parts of India. He did not specify any particular incident but referred broadly to reports that have emerged in recent weeks.
Separately, the Chief Minister also spoke about his recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. He said communication with Shah has been continuous, covering a range of issues. Abdullah noted that he regularly raises matters related to the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and the framing of business rules for the Union Territory.
"There were many issues that I raised before the Home Minister," Abdullah said, indicating that discussions on the region's political and administrative status remain ongoing.
