Onam Tourism Week ends Sunday with VP-flagged city pageant
Onam Tourism Week concludes Sunday with a 69-float procession, 99 art forms, and the Vice-President flagging off the event.
The Onam Tourism Week Celebrations, which brought Kerala's classical, folk, and ethnic art traditions to a wider audience, will draw to a close on Sunday, August 30, 2026, with the traditional closing-day procession in Thiruvananthapuram.
Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan will flag off the procession at 5 p.m. from Lok Bhavan. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, Tourism Minister P.C. Vishnunadh, Health Minister K. Muraleedharan, and Transport Minister C.P. John are scheduled to attend the ceremony.
The procession will wind through the city centre, passing Vellayambalam, Museum, Palayam, and Statue before concluding at East Fort. It will feature around 69 floats and installations by government departments, highlighting Kerala's social progress, traditions, and contemporary issues.
Nearly 99 art forms rooted in diverse cultural identities will be part of the pageant. Traditional folk performances such as Pulikali, Garudan Parava, and Muthappan Theyyam will be showcased, alongside performances from Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Telangana. The procession will also include performances by members of the transgender community.
In view of the event, traffic restrictions will be in place across the city on Sunday. Additionally, police have declared the airspace within a one-kilometre radius of Lok Bhavan a red zone in light of the Vice-President's visit.
