
Centre Notifies Rules Making IST Mandatory for All Official Purposes
India has notified rules making Indian Standard Time compulsory for all legal, administrative and commercial purposes, with a 180-day transition period.
The Union government has formally notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, making Indian Standard Time (IST) the single mandatory reference for all legal, administrative, commercial, and official purposes across the country. The rules were published in the Official Gazette on August 27, 2026, and will come into effect after a 180-day transition period, giving government departments, businesses, and institutions time to adapt their systems.
The move, part of the 'One Nation, One Time' initiative, is driven by the growing dependence of critical sectors on accurate time-stamping. Banking and digital payments, telecommunications, railways, power grids, computer networks, and government records all rely on precise time references. The government has noted that discrepancies between time sources can disrupt coordination and record-keeping in these areas.
The rules are designed to ensure that all systems across the country use accurate and consistent IST. This is expected to improve the reliability of digital transactions, enhance coordination among transport systems, and support the smooth functioning of telecom and internet networks. It will also aid in precise time-keeping for power systems and the maintenance of legal and government records.
A key objective is to reduce India's dependence on foreign satellite-based time sources, such as GPS. The new framework enables the use of the indigenous NavIC satellite system and other approved Indian timing sources for secure and reliable time dissemination. This is seen as crucial for national security and for protecting critical infrastructure from cyber-attacks and data manipulation.
IST is maintained by the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) using advanced atomic clocks and satellite links, ensuring traceability to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) with an uncertainty of less than 3 nanoseconds. The ISRO has been given traceability to IST with nanosecond accuracy via NavIC.
In July 2026, the Ministry commissioned a demonstration network based on White Rabbit Technology at the Regional Reference Standard Laboratory in Bengaluru. This pilot project showcased how high-precision time synchronisation can be disseminated across sectors, including high-frequency financial markets, stock exchanges, and national power grids. The government has stated that this technology will be revolutionary in maintaining the stability of these critical systems.
