Ontario Premier Vows All-Out Response to US Tariffs

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has pledged to use every available measure to counter the United States' latest tariff actions, stating that protecting Ontarians remains his foremost concern.

Speaking on Wednesday, Ford expressed a preference for de-escalation and a return to the negotiating table, noting that both nations ultimately seek a fair agreement. His remarks come as the 50 percent US tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect just after midnight on Saturday, following the collapse of extended trade talks.

Ford has previously indicated he would consider tougher retaliatory steps, including restricting Ontario's electricity exports to the US. He acknowledged that Ontario is not the only province supplying power to the US, and stressed the need for all provinces to act together. He said he is willing to take the lead in coordinating such a response.

The Canadian federal government announced on Tuesday its own countermeasures, imposing tariffs on over 700 US goods valued at approximately C$27.6 billion (about $20 billion). Ottawa also unveiled a C$7.5 billion assistance package to support domestic businesses and workers affected by the trade dispute.
