OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap Steps Down After Eight Years to Launch New Venture

Brad Lightcap, Chief Operating Officer of OpenAI, has announced he is leaving the artificial intelligence company to launch a new venture. The announcement came in a message to the internal team, where he described the decision as bittersweet after an eight-year tenure.

Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 after CEO Sam Altman introduced him to co-founders Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever. At the time, the founders presented a pitch deck arguing that artificial general intelligence was achievable as models scaled predictably. Over the years, Lightcap built the initial versions of several operational and business divisions, including finance, legal, corporate security, government relations, and strategic partnerships.

Reflecting on the company's growth, Lightcap noted that OpenAI evolved from a small research lab into one of the most consequential companies of its time. He highlighted milestones from serving the first user to the billionth, and pointed to the growing scale and ambition of partnerships, while acknowledging occasional challenges along the way.

In recent months, Lightcap said his focus had shifted toward the next horizon and what might stand in the way of mission success. He indicated that details about his next endeavour would be shared later, but expressed strong belief in OpenAI's future and his desire to support the mission from a different vantage point.

Lightcap will remain available at the company over the coming weeks to assist with ongoing operations. He expressed deep gratitude to colleagues and reassured them that he would not be going far, saying he would always be a phone call away.
