OpenAI Ends Cursor Model Supply After SpaceX Takeover
OpenAI is terminating Cursor's direct access to its models by November 2026, citing SpaceX's acquisition and past compliance issues.
OpenAI has formally notified SpaceX that it will terminate the supply of its AI models to the coding platform Cursor, following SpaceX's acquisition of the developer tool. The company has set a shutdown date of November 12, 2026, for direct model access, invoking a contractual clause that permits cancellation after a change of corporate control.
In an official statement, OpenAI said it is providing the maximum notice allowed under the agreement to give developers ample time to transition. The decision, described as difficult, stems from concerns about compliance. OpenAI pointed to past instances where companies owned by Elon Musk, including Twitter and xAI—both now consolidated under SpaceX—allegedly violated contractual terms.
"We cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts," the company stated. OpenAI also noted that Musk admitted under oath earlier this year that xAI had breached OpenAI's terms of service.
The AI firm explained that large-scale partnerships typically require custom contracts to ensure safety and adherence to service terms. It added that upcoming regulatory and governance standards for its next model, Astra, necessitate stricter deployment controls, preventing distribution to Cursor.
OpenAI acknowledged its nearly four-year collaboration with Cursor, expressing respect for the team and product. It pledged support for affected developers during the transition period, saying it is ready to "go above and beyond" to assist them.
