Five undertrials booked for assaulting jail warder at Bengaluru prison

Five undertrial prisoners at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru have been booked for allegedly attacking a jail warder and attempting to strangle him. The incident occurred on September 2, following a dispute over prison security rules.

The accused have been identified as Mohammad Muzamil, Abdul Shafwan, Mohammad Rizwan, Niyaz, and Kalandar Shafi. All five are undertrials lodged in connection with a 2025 Mangaluru murder case.

The victim, Manjunath Haveli, is a 32-year-old warder who has served at the prison since 2019. According to the First Information Report (FIR), Haveli had gone to Annex-1 that morning to gather information about an inmate whose case was slated for review by the Life Convict Review Committee.

Around 10:45 a.m., Muzamil allegedly confronted Haveli over an earlier incident on August 22. On that day, Haveli had stopped additional items brought during Muzamil's transfer from the security section from being taken inside the prison. The prison department has imposed restrictions on the quantity of items inmates can receive from family members since last year.

The FIR alleges that Muzamil abused the warder, threatened to kill him, and punched him in the face and nose, causing bleeding. The other four undertrials then joined the assault, dragging Haveli into another room where they continued attacking him and attempted to strangle him. Other prison staff present at the spot intervened and rescued Haveli.

Based on a complaint filed by Manjunatha H.G., in-charge superintendent of the central prison, the Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including attempt to murder.
