Schrader's 'Basics of Philosophy' premieres at Venice with themes of childhood

Paul Schrader brought his latest directorial effort, "The Basics of Philosophy," to the Venice Film Festival, where it screened out of competition. The film features a cast including Jack Huston, Bill Pullman, and Sofia Boutella, who were present at the festival's press conference.

Huston takes on the role of a repressed philosophy professor whose life spirals into crisis when a figure from his past, a victim of an old transgression, suddenly reappears. The film's cast also includes Daniel Zovatto, Dana Delany, Shiloh Fernandez, Karl Glusman, and Elizabeth Petruso.

Schrader, reflecting on his creative process, noted that his films consistently draw from a singular source: his childhood. This thematic thread runs through a career that began with his celebrated collaborations with Martin Scorsese, starting with the 1976 classic "Taxi Driver." He went on to co-write "Raging Bull" and penned the screenplays for "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Bringing Out the Dead."

As a writer-director, Schrader has helmed features such as "American Gigolo" and the critically acclaimed "First Reformed" (2017) and "The Card Counter" (2021), both of which earned Golden Lion nominations. "First Reformed" also secured him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In 2022, the Venice Film Festival honored him with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, cementing his legacy in world cinema.
