Pentagon inks framework pacts with Boeing, RTX for SM-3 interceptor parts
The Pentagon has signed framework agreements with Boeing and RTX to boost production of SM-3 Block IIA and Block IB interceptor components.
The US Department of Defense has entered into framework agreements with Boeing and RTX to scale up the production of components used in SM-3 Block IIA and SM-3 Block IB interceptors. The announcement was made on Friday.
The agreements are designed to strengthen the manufacturing pipeline for a series of critical ship-fired, surface-to-air interceptors. These munitions form the backbone of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, a key element of the US Navy's layered defense architecture.
Under the terms of the framework deals, both companies are expected to increase output of specific parts needed for the two interceptor variants. The Pentagon said the move is intended to ensure a more robust and resilient supply chain for these weapons.
The SM-3 family of interceptors is designed to engage ballistic missiles in space, providing a mid-course defense layer. The Block IIA variant offers a larger kill vehicle and greater range, while the Block IB features an advanced seeker for improved discrimination.
