Peru Labor Regulator Investigates Fatal Accident at MMG's Las Bambas Copper Mine

Peru's labor watchdog is investigating a fatal accident at MMG's Las Bambas copper mine that killed two workers and injured three others.

Peru's labor inspection agency has opened an investigation into a fatal accident at the Las Bambas copper mine, operated by China's MMG, which resulted in the deaths of two workers and injuries to three others.

The incident occurred on Tuesday during maintenance work to replace a pump in a clarification pond, according to the National Superintendency of Labor Inspection (Sunafil). The agency stated it is inspecting the site to verify the facts surrounding the accident.

MMG confirmed the accident and announced that a gradual restart of operations at the mine, located in the Peruvian Andes, is expected to begin on August 21. The company also stated it is cooperating fully with authorities.

Las Bambas, which began operations in 2016, is a significant contributor to global copper supply, accounting for roughly 2% of worldwide output. Peru is the world's third-largest copper producer. The mine produced 410,829 metric tons of copper last year, exceeding its 2024 supply forecast by 28%, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The mine has faced repeated operational suspensions in the past due to protests from local communities seeking a greater share of economic benefits from the resource.
