Philippines Warns China Could Exploit US-South Korea Drill Reductions

Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro has cautioned that China could interpret recent reductions in US-South Korea military exercises as an opening to strengthen its position in the Indo-Pacific region. Speaking on the sidelines of the Seoul Defense Dialogue on Monday, Teodoro said Beijing might view scaled-back drills as a gap in regional deterrence.

Teodoro, however, noted that Washington has provided Manila with "definite assurances" that its security commitments to the Philippines remain unchanged. The remarks come amid ongoing adjustments to the US military footprint on the Korean Peninsula, which have raised questions among allies about the consistency of American engagement in Asia.

In a separate observation, the Philippine defence chief accused China of leveraging democratic institutions to propagate what he described as "distortive narratives." He did not elaborate on specific instances but framed the issue as part of broader efforts to undermine trust in open societies.

The comments were made during the annual security forum in Seoul, where defence officials from across the region are discussing cooperative security challenges.
