Monsoon Rains Swamp Cavite, Triggering Mass Evacuations Near Manila
Heavy monsoon rains worsened by Typhoon Dolphin have flooded Cavite, displacing over 12,000 people and prompting rescue operations.
Persistent monsoon rains, intensified by the distant Typhoon Dolphin, have submerged large parts of Cavite province, forcing Philippine Coast Guard personnel to wade through flooded streets and evacuate residents by rubber boat.
Video footage from the affected areas shows homes surrounded by murky floodwaters, with rescue teams ferrying residents to higher ground. The operation unfolded as the seasonal downpour, which did not involve a direct landfall by the typhoon, continued to batter southern Luzon, including the densely populated metropolitan Manila region.
Disaster-response officials report that more than 12,000 people have been displaced by the torrential rains and subsequent flooding. In response, several cities and towns in the northern part of the country have suspended classes for Friday and Saturday.
The current flooding follows a separate tropical storm that struck last week, leaving at least six people dead. Among the casualties were four villagers who perished in a landslide and a rockslide in the provinces of Benguet and Rizal.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Dolphin has moved on to strike China's eastern coast, making landfall on Sunday evening near Taizhou in Zhejiang province and impacting northern Fujian. The storm prompted the preemptive relocation of over 300,000 people in the region before it arrived.
