Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit is set to carry significant diplomatic weight, with the agenda extending well beyond the multilateral gathering itself. The visit is expected to prioritise strengthening bilateral ties with Iran, Tajikistan, and other Central Asian nations, according to official indications.
A key focus of the engagements will be aligning positions ahead of the BRICS Summit scheduled for September. With India set to play a prominent role in the grouping, the discussions are likely to cover economic cooperation and strategic coordination among member states.
Another major item on the table is India's campaign for a two-year term on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-2029 period. The visit provides an opportunity to seek support from SCO partners for this bid, which is a central pillar of India's multilateral diplomacy.
Additionally, the visit is expected to revive planning for the long-pending India-Central Asia Summit, which has not convened since 2022. Reviving this format would allow India to deepen its engagement with the region, particularly in areas of connectivity, trade, and energy security.
