PM Modi Pays Tributes to Shastri in Tashkent, Plants Tree with Uzbek President
PM Modi paid floral tributes at the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent and planted a tree with Uzbek President Mirziyoyev, as the two nations elevated their partnership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his two-day state visit to Uzbekistan by paying floral tributes at the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent on Sunday, August 30, 2026. He was joined by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in planting a tree at the Presidential Palace garden, symbolising the shared commitment of both nations to environmental sustainability.
The tribute honoured former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who died in Tashkent on January 11, 1966, hours after signing the Tashkent Declaration that ended the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that Shastri's call of 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' continues to inspire generations, and his life embodied simplicity, courage, and devotion to the nation.
The tree-planting ceremony followed delegation-level talks at the Kuksaroy Presidential Palace, where India and Uzbekistan agreed to elevate their Strategic Partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and set a bilateral trade target of $5 billion by 2030.
President Mirziyoyev conferred Uzbekistan's highest honour for foreign leaders, the Oliy Darajali Do'stlik Order, on PM Modi for his contributions to strengthening bilateral friendship.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi participated in a yoga session hosted by the Yoga Federation of Uzbekistan and met members of the Indian diaspora in Tashkent. He will next travel to Kyrgyzstan for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, scheduled from August 31 to September 1.
