PM Modi asks teachers to tackle screen addiction, drug abuse among students

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with 82 National Award-winning teachers at his official residence on Friday, September 4, 2026, to discuss the evolving role of educators in shaping young lives. The discussion centred on the need to move beyond purely academic instruction and focus on the holistic well-being of students.

The awardees included 48 teachers from the Department of School Education and Literacy, 21 faculty members from higher education institutions and polytechnics, and 13 skill trainers from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. During the interaction, the teachers shared innovative methods they have used to make classroom learning more engaging.

A key concern raised by the Prime Minister was the growing issue of excessive screen time among children. He suggested that teachers encourage students to take up sports, physical games, and creative activities as a gradual alternative to prolonged device use. He also advised educators to speak with parents about their children's late-night mobile phone usage.

PM Modi also called on teachers to be vigilant about behavioural changes in students that could indicate drug use, and to offer support to those struggling with addiction. He noted that with the decline of traditional joint families, teachers now play a more significant role in children's lives.

Referring to the National Education Policy, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of taking students outside the classroom and connecting them with real-world skills. He further urged teachers to inculcate values such as the dignity of labour, going beyond the prescribed syllabus to preserve childhood innocence and nurture natural curiosity.
