12 Years of Jan-Dhan: 59 Crore Accounts, 56% Held by Women, Says Minister

Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annpurna Devi, has marked the completion of 12 years of the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), describing its evolution as a shift from financial inclusion to economic empowerment.

In a post on social media platform X, the Minister credited the scheme's success to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that it has connected millions of citizens—particularly women and rural households—to the formal banking system. She added that the initiative has laid a strong groundwork for financial self-reliance across the country.

Sharing key achievements, the Minister noted that over 59 crore Jan-Dhan accounts have been opened to date. Of these, 56% belong to women, and 78% are held in villages and small towns, underscoring the scheme's reach in underserved areas. Total deposits in these accounts have surpassed Rs 3.1 lakh crore.

Highlighting the impact of the JAM (Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile) trinity, she said that Rs 53 lakh crore has been transferred directly to beneficiaries, streamlining subsidy delivery and reducing leakages.

The Minister emphasised that PMJDY is not merely a bank account opening initiative but a transformative journey that has brought dignity, security, and empowerment to millions of Indians.
